Golf

What we offer

Students at Thomas Telford School are offered the chance to visit a local course as an introduction to the game of Golf. This is a voluntary offer made to all students in Years 7 and 8. This has been very successful over the years and we have formed a close alliance with Shifnal Golf Club. This has also resulted in students then taking up the game and joining local clubs.

Competitions

Students that are members of local clubs and hold a handicap are invited to play at the annual Shropshire Schools Golf Championship at Arscott GC. This is an individual and team event, with the winning team and runners up both qualifying for the National Schools Championship at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire. This is a superb event that we have now qualified for the last 12 years.

Facilities

Students are able to access Shifnal GC as part of a structured PE lesson. Thomas Telford School also has close links with Wrekin GC. Otherwise, Golf is very much a sport that students play outside of school in recreational time. School are more than happy to enter students into events and offer support to all competitive golfers.

Session 3 opportunities

There is no Session 3 programme available to students for Golf. But full support is offered to students that play the game at a competitive level.

Recent Success

Over the years we have achieved superb success in Golf. We have won numerous medals at County Championships with a long list of students that have left the event with Gold medals. We have also won the team event on countless occasions resulting in qualification for the national event. At Woodhall Spa, we have performed superbly over the years and have been Runners Up on three separate occasions, indeed one year, missing out on being crowned as National Champions by just one solitary shot.
