About our Careers Department

The aim of our School Careers policy is develop the skills, attitudes and abilities of our students to enable them to make effective decisions about their future education, training and employment. Young people’s careers are forged out of their experience, progress and achievements in learning and work. All our students have access to a planned programme of Careers Education which provides opportunities to develop and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to make realistic career decisions.

Thomas Telford School provides an ‘in-house’ careers advice and guidance service which is staffed by two full-time Careers Advisors and two part-time Careers Link teachers. The service is led by Mrs Flynn, our Careers Lead who can be contacted by phone on 01952 200000 or by email - JFlynn@ttsonline.net. Our Careers, Advice and Guidance and Provider Access Policies are available in the ‘School Policies & Documents’ section of the School website. The Careers Department provision includes:

  • Open access for all students to individual, personalised careers advice and guidance from our friendly School Careers Team
  • Annual Higher Education and Careers Fair with over 45 exhibitors
  • A planned programme of careers education and guidance for every year group
  • Access to a Careers Resource Centre in our flagship Reynolds Building with comprehensive and up-to-date information on opportunities in Education, Training and Employment
  • Access to on-line careers guidance sites such as Xello and Shortlister
  • Opportunities to experience for the world of work through in-person and virtual work experience placements
  • Support for the processes of job search, CVs, applications and preparing for interview and assessment centres
  • Advice on the best combination of subjects for different careers
  • Comprehensive quality controlled support for university applications, including careers support provision on examination Results Day

Business and Industry Partnerships

One of the features which distinguishes Thomas Telford School from other Schools is the quality of the partnership shared with industry. Financial sponsorship is a significant investment in the life and work of the School, but employers also make major contributions to the design, delivery and assessment of the curriculum.
