Thomas Telford School takes immense pride in its athletics success. The sport has gone from strength to strength over the years throughout all age groups and across all disciplines.
During the winter season we focus on Sports hall athletics where we have house competitions which the students thoroughly enjoy, this is also great preparation for the summer season where there are an abundance of athletics events. During the summer months, we offer a running session 3 for our distance runners as well as an athletics night where we have taken students to the track for the evening to allow them to practice their events. We also enjoy athletics as part of the PE timetable where students are able to learn the technique for each event and also show their interest for the competitions.
During the winter season we prepare for the Sportshall County school games where we have qualified for regionals the past few years. During the summer we compete in the English Schools ESAA Cup, The Shropshire Schools championships, The Mason Trophy for athletes who qualify, our local County Cup as well as the Telford and Wrekin Schools League competitions. The summer is always full of athletics events and over the course of the season we always look to incorporate training sessions to prepare our teams for these events.
We have really pushed athletics on this past year, even with the difficulties of covid, our students competed recently at the English Schools track and field cup, as one of the only state schools, where we placed runners up across all age groups. Our students also competed individually at the Shropshire Championships against club athletes, where they would in normal times qualify for Mason Trophy. Although there was no Mason Trophy this year, we had 30 students who would have qualified which is a huge representation for the school.
We also have individuals who are currently representing Great Britain in track and field events who we are extremely proud to have at Thomas Telford School and have a rich history of alumni athletes who have represented their respective countries.
