Thomas Telford celebrates National Apprenticeship Week

Tue, 09 Feb 2021

National Apprenticeship Week 2021 has arrived! And although things may be a bit different this year with it being virtual, it’s still a huge celebration of apprentices and all the work they’ve done to help businesses adapt and build during a difficult past year.  Thomas Telford School is joining in the celebrations by providing information and resources to students to help them find out more.

Case-studies of former Thomas Telford students who are now successful apprentices are also being shared with students to help inspire and motivate them with their remote learning.  Eleanor W, who left the Sixth Form last year spoke really positively about her Business Operations Analyst degree apprenticeship at Capegmini:

“For me I had no idea what I wanted to pursue in my future, so I wasn’t happy committing to a student loan. With the support of the Careers Department and my fantastic business teacher Miss Jones I applied to a few universities but also a few apprenticeships to explore my options. There are so many benefits of a degree apprenticeship, the pay, four years of work experience and a free degree! Once I was offered my place with Capgemini I decided it was the best option for me.”

Luke G, who is doing a digital technology degree apprenticeship, also at Capgemini, was keen to pass on some sound advice to current students:

“I would advise current students to not overlook apprenticeships. Even if university is their preferred route, there are so many opportunities within apprenticeships that are worth considering before focusing solely on university! When applying for apprenticeships, don’t just focus on skills you already have… companies are more interested in how you approach learning new skills, and try to demonstrate an ‘open-minded’ attitude towards learning more and developing yourself! Most importantly of all, ensure to do as much research on the company as possible before applying for the apprenticeship or going for an interview. It is just as important that the company is right for you, not just that you are right for the company.”

The Thomas Telford Careers Team is promoting a range of webinars and events taking place during the week which runs from 8th to 14th February and students can read the case-studies by clicking on the links below:
