Foodbank Donations

Mon, 11 Apr 2016

Well done and thank you to all of our students, parents and staff for their generous donations of food and essential items to the Telford Foodbank at the very end of last term. It is the third year that Thomas Telford School has supported Telford Crisis Network (TCN) who run Telford Foodbank and provide emergency food parcels to local individuals and families in financial crisis. The team at TCN were delighted to accept the donations and remarked that the donation was the single biggest donation received to date.

Thank you also to Blakemore Wholesale’s Wolverhampton Cash & Carry for adding to the super sum of £750 raised by the School choir and rounding it up to £1000, and also allowing some of the choir members the opportunity to visit the stores to purchase the items on the Foodbank’s wish-list. The choir could see the fantastic results of their efforts spent busking and bag packing in their trolleys and again in the Foodbank store room.

Once the choristers had unloaded both minibuses, which were full to the brim with the donations, they had a tour of the Telford Foodbank stores and were shown how volunteers put together emergency parcels. This was filmed and played to the rest of the School on broadcast.

It was then explained to the students how the emergency parcels are distributed to various collection points across the borough for people most in need, and how people can access support. Figures show that the Foodbank has provided over 54,000 meals to adults and children since opening in April 2013.

It was agreed that following the revision and examination period, Thomas Telford School would set up regular visits to the Foodbank to volunteer with stacking shelves and creating parcels. The students enjoyed seeing the impact of their efforts and how they can make a positive difference to their community.
