Act 5 furthers the themes of death and grief presented at the end of Act 4. Starting with Act 5 Scene 3 as an extract, how is grief presented in the play?

Consider:

  • Romeo’s ruthless nature – death of Paris
  • The death of Romeo and the death of Juliet
  • The reactions of Friar Lawrence, the families and the Prince

Write an extract into whole text response for this question – you should analyse the writer’s methods, make judgements on the characters and consider Shakespeare’s authorial intent.

Whole text references could include:

  • Act 5 Scene 1 – Romeo’s dream and its significance (prophetic irony), Romeo’s desire to join Juliet in death, the visit to the apothecary
  • Act 4 Scene 5 – reactions to Juliet’s death
