£27,000 raised for Cancer Charities!

Tue, 03 May 2022

In July 2021, staff and students at Thomas Telford School set themselves a challenge to raise £25,000 for various charities supporting Cancer sufferers. The illness is one that will have touched many students and families in one way or another and helping to support others is something that both the students and staff are passionate about.

Starting with a fantastic whole school, 12-mile walk from the school up the Wrekin in July, students, staff and parents put their best foot forward to raise as much money as possible for these fantastic causes. A true sight to behold as 750 students walked up the Wrekin together for a fun day to raise money as much money as possible.

Various events have been organised over the recent months, including non-uniform days, a staff and student Bake-Off competition, raffles, and a Christmas Enterprise fayre organised and run by students in Year 7 and 8.

The students hard work and the generosity of parents has been incredible, and we have raised a staggering £27,200 in just four months. The money raised will be shared across the various local Cancer Charities that the staff and student at Thomas Telford School have chosen to support.

Helen Knight – Development Manager for Lingen Davies said, ““I am blown away with how this wonderful group of students has taken on the challenge of raising money for Lingen Davies. They had some really inspiring ideas when I went to see them earlier this year, and for them to have worked this hard, as a team to achieve their goals is just wonderful. We are delighted to be receiving a fantastic donation from the students of Thomas Telford School. The money will be used towards the purchase of our CT scanner at the cancer centre, allowing more patients to be seen locally here in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.”

The school charity support has not stopped there. Students also raised money to provide Christmas gift boxes for 66 children who are cared for by the Home Start Telford and Wrekin Charity. Boxes were put together and delivered to the charity for the children to have them in time for Christmas and were sent along with handmade Christmas Cards from the Business students. Sharon Uppal, co-ordinator at Home Start T&W, said, “Thank you so much to all the staff, pupils and parents at Thomas Telford. This donation could not have come at a better time and will make the world of difference to the parents and their children on Christmas day after such a challenging year.”

The school will be setting a new fundraising target for 2022 and the students will decide which charities they would like to support ready to take up their next fundraising challenge.
