Awe Inspiring!

Tue, 24 Mar 2015

A group of Sixth Form Geography students travelled to Iceland to investigate some of the remarkable features of its awe inspiring landscape. They spent some time in the Blue Lagoon in a semi blizzard which was an amazing experience as the water temperature was 38 degrees C.

On the second day, students were asked to survey the fantastic basaltic columnar coastline and they managed to complete this task superbly despite a backdrop of the highest Atlantic rollers that Iceland has seen this winter! (Later that day, winds were measured at 40 metres per second!).

Some students’ favourite experience was seeing the Solheimjokull Glacier and we were fortunate enough to be the only visitors – a real wilderness experience: beautiful, magnificent and awe inspiring!

Day three - our Golden Day - began stormy but our intrepid students managed to explore the fissures and rift valley in the centre of the island to help understand the tectonic movements of the North American and Eurasian plate.

We finished our tour with a visit to the geyser region to watch the hot bubbling water move every three minutes.
