TTS MedSoc welcomes back former student

Fri, 22 Jan 2021

Thomas Telford’s Medical Society enjoyed its first meeting of the term on Thursday and were delighted to welcome back former student Laura Gumsley who is training to be a Physician Associate.  Physician associates are medically trained, generalist healthcare professionals, who work alongside doctors and provide medical care as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team. Laura generously gave up her time to describe the relatively new role to students and shared her experiences at university and on placement.

Students asked some really thoughtful questions about the challenges of the role and Laura talked about the realities of dealing with emotional situations, such as bereavement and death.  Her talk shone a light on one of the emerging roles in healthcare and it was inspiring to hear how Laura wants to be a pioneer for the profession –she has ambitions to be the first Physician Associate to work in an Air Ambulance!

Mrs Flynn, was delighted to see how many students took part in the Zoom session which forms part of the online careers programme which is running again this term. The MedSoc look forward to meeting another former TTS student and trainee GP, next week.
