Changes to PGCE programmes

All Initial Teacher Training (ITT) providers have to revalidate their programmes to meet new national qualification regulations set by the Qualifications and Assessment Authority.

As a result of these changes and to ensure that the West Midlands Consortium is able to provide the best opportunities for its students, it is changing its validating body to Staffordshire University from Roehampton University.

This change of validation bodies will provide the broadest range of ITT qualifications for its students as they prepare for their future career in teaching

Key aspects of the new programmes, subject to validation by Staffordshire University, include:

A Postgraduate Certificate of Education award which meets the new academic requirements and has a total of 60 Masters level credits.

A Professional Graduate Certificate of Education award which has 30 Masters level credits.
(Which is equivalent to existing PGCE programmes.)

Access to Staffordshire University’s Library and online resources.

Future potential of Masters degree programmes with Staffordshire University.

(The Masters level credits obtained from either of the above awards could be used towards a Masters degree.)

Both qualifications also carry Qualified Teacher Status.

It is important to note that the Postgraduate Certificate of Education award will be based on student performance at Masters level. The alternative award of a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education will be available and it is essential to remember that this is equivalent to a current PGCE award.

If you have any questions about the revalidation please do not hesitate in contacting Alan Fowler, Director of Teacher Training.
