National Semi Finals Victory for Under 13 Girls

Fri, 28 Mar 2014

The Under 13 girls football team reached the national finals of the ESFA Cup when they beat South Hunsley School from East Riding, Yorkshire on penalties.

Thomas Telford made a fantastic start to the game, dominating the possession and playing some good football.  However, South Hunsley were the team to break and score with a fantastic long range effort to put them ahead after fifteen minutes.  Thomas Telford were quick to bounce back and within five minutes they had equalised when Sophie Johnson struck a great ball from twenty yards out which the goal keeper could do nothing about.

Both teams continued to battle and South Hunsley always looked a threat when breaking and going forward.  However Thomas Telford’s defence were tight and coped with the pressure they were put under. Just before half time, Thomas Telford scored their second goal where Sadie Craig coolly finished, slotting it past the keeper and putting Thomas Telford School 2-1 up.  The second half continued to be a battle and Thomas Telford worked hard for each other and showed some great play, keeping the ball and pushing forward. Within ten minutes Thomas Telford’s Sadie Craig scored again, to take the score to 3-1.

Despite being 3-1 down, South Hunsley had not given up and Thomas Telford’s defence were put under a lot of pressure.  There was some fantastic defending needed by Eleanor Vernon, Sienna Parrish and Ella Kinsey to keep Thomas Telford ahead. With ten minutes to go, South Hunsley pushed their girls on which made it difficult for Thomas Telford and with some excellent play by South Hunsley they scored to make it 3-2.  At this point, momentum was with South Hunsley and within the last minute of the game South Hunsley equalised to make the score 3-3.

In extra time, Thomas Telford School didn’t let their heads drop and continued to play good football and create chances.  However, South Hunsley defended really well and Thomas Telford could not get the goal to win the game in extra time. The game then went in to penalties with Thomas Telford School coming out eventual winners 4-3 with some excellent well taken penalties.

This fantastic effort and performance by Thomas Telford School has now put them in to the ESFA National Final where they will face Thomas Estley Community College from South Leicestershire.
