Headship Team visit to Mercers' Hall

Mon, 02 Dec 2019

On Tuesday the Headship Team travelled to the beautiful Mercers’ Hall in London to meet with Mr Rob Abernethy. Mr Abernethy is Clerk of the Mercers’ Company and we wanted to find out more about his fundraising challenge which he is completing in January in aid of the Gurkha Welfare Trust’s Schools Programme in Nepal.

The students heard how Mr Abernethy will be cycling the entire width of the brutal terrain of Nepal with the objective of raising money towards the rebuilding of the Shree Prabha School situated in the Gulmi District. He hopes to raise vital funds towards building and repairing this school which is situated in a remote region of Nepal in order to improve access to education and in turn offer a better future to Nepali children.

Mr Abernethy will begin his challenge in January at Darjeeling in India and finish up in Lansdowne India, an incredible distance of around 2,200km. The epic journey will take him around 28 days.

The Headship Team enjoyed meeting with him and a representative of the Gurkha Welfare Trust to find out more about the charity and the cycling challenge and to consider ways in which students at Thomas Telford School can support his fundraising. Our community here at Thomas Telford School has a target of raising £5,000 towards this project before the end of the academic year and we would like to invite each student to consider ways in which we can fundraise together to hit our target. Let’s go for it!
