Nine Teams win National Cup Finals!

Fri, 27 May 2016

Students and staff are celebrating the news that nine of the School’s football teams have won National Cup Finals!

The news marks an unbelievable achievement for the School as nine of their boys and girls teams dominated the line-up of the English Schools’ FA (ESFA) Playstation Schools’ Cup Festival from Monday 16 to Wednesday 18 May at the Madejski Stadium, home to Reading Football Club. Remarkably, five of these eight finals resulted in a win for Thomas Telford School and the teams walked away from the festival with five National Cup Trophies!

A further three boys teams reached the Premier League National Finals, all of which resulted in victories for Thomas Telford School.  Finally, the U13 girls’ team led the School to a 1-0 victory during the Easter holidays in the Football League Girls Cup at Wembley, making it nine teams in a year to win a National Cup Final!

Last year, teams from Thomas Telford School made it through to two National Cup Finals, with the U13 and U14 boys’ team winning both. This years’ achievements are so exceptional it is unlikely to ever be repeated again.

A display of photographs from the finals and the nine National Cup trophies have taken pride of place on a display in School to celebrate this remarkable achievement.

Headmaster Sir Kevin Satchwell said:  “We are so proud of all our teams reaching these National Finals and to have won nine of the twelve competitions is phenomenal. All students involved were a credit to the school showing sportsmanship and compassion to the other teams. Hundreds of students travelled down to Reading to support their peers on this memorable occasion.”
